What your Health Teacher Omitted

Think back to high school health class, you know the “good” one, where they talked about s-e-x. During that class, when you learned about the male reproductive parts you learned about the scrotum, testes, vas deferens, seminal vesicle, epididymis, shaft, glans….all of it. You learned about all the parts of the penis.
Think about the female reproduction and the genitourinary system you learned about. The breasts, the uterus and the vagina. I hate to break it to you, but your health teacher, and the curriculum likely omitted SO.MUCH. about female reproductive anatomy. Did they talk about the vulva, or the labia majora, labia minora, vestibule, clitoris, urethra, cervix? Likely not.

Every day I have patients sit in my office and answer the question “What do you refer to your female reproductive parts as?” with “Vagina.” The vagina is one part, and serves one function of the female genitourinary system. However, there are other parts, which serve other purposes. Some parts are designated for pleasure, some are protective against infection, some are made from the same tissue the male prostate is made of, and some have the same cellular makeup as the urinary bladder.

Candescent Health and Wellness is committed to education surrounding intimate health, wellness and empowerment. We have developed several presentations to aide in your understanding of the genitourinary system and how various influences, whether chemicals, sexual activity, aging or illness can impact that system.
